Songs from artists signed to Common Music Group have began disappearing from TikTok after the 2 sides did not agree a brand new deal over content material licensing, sparking a public spat.

Music by artists together with Taylor Swift and Drake was not obtainable on TikTok when CNBC checked on Thursday morning.

A licensing settlement between UMG and TikTok, which is owned by Chinese language tech large ByteDance, expired on Wednesday.

UMG accused TikTok of bullying and intimidation in its contract negotiations. UMG alleged TikTok proposed paying its artists and songwriters “at a price that’s a fraction of the speed that equally located main social platforms pay.” 

The music label additionally alleged TikTok is permitting its platform to be “flooded with AI-generated recordings.”

TikTok responded by saying UMG is placing its “personal greed above the pursuits of their artists and songwriters.”

A UMG spokesperson instructed CNBC on Thursday that for the reason that licensing settlement expired, “TikTok is now eradicating the audio.”

A spokesperson for the social media app confirmed to CNBC that music from Common Music Group has now been faraway from TikTok.

Tiktok has turn into a platform that may make songs, even these which can be older, go viral if they’re picked up and used on movies that customers submit on the platform.

However labels have debated whether or not TikTok is paying sufficient to the artists whose songs are on the quick video app.

UMG mentioned just one% of its complete income comes from TikTok, regardless of the social community’s “large and rising person base, quickly rising promoting income and rising reliance on music-based content material.”
