The US on Thursday added two subsidiaries of Chinese language genetics firm BGI to a commerce blacklist over allegations it performed genetic evaluation and surveillance actions for Beijing, which Washington says was used to repress ethnic minorities in China.

The US Division of Commerce, which oversees export controls, stated in a press release that BGI Analysis and BGI Tech Options (Hongkong) “current a major threat of diversion to China’s army applications.”

“The addition of those entities is predicated upon info that signifies their assortment and evaluation of genetic knowledge poses a major threat of contributing to monitoring and surveillance by the federal government of China, which has been utilized within the repression of ethnic minorities in China,” the assertion stated.
